How indicators work

An indicator is a value Chartnaut calculates bar by bar and draws on the chart: VWAP, RSI, ATR, an opening range box. Chartnaut comes with a set built in, and the agent builds any that are missing. Your own indicators live under Tools → Indicators.

Built-in and your own

Built-in indicators are ready to use on any chart. In the indicator picker they sit under Native, grouped as momentum, trend, volume, volatility and oscillator.

Your own indicators are the ones you build or add. They sit under Library in the same picker:

  • Mine holds the indicators you built or added, next to your definitions.

  • Community holds indicators other traders have shared.

  • Create your own links to the indicator and definition libraries, where you start a new one.

Building your own

Open Tools → Indicators, click New and describe what you want in plain words. The agent writes the script and shows it on a preview chart as it works, so you check the result on real days before you use it. Each working change is saved as a new version, listed on the indicator's Versions tab. To change it later, open it and click Make a change.

Build your own indicator walks through a session VWAP with standard deviation bands from start to finish. Build a custom indicator covers the builder in detail, and Scripting covers writing the code yourself.

Where indicators appear

On a chart in Charts, click Indicator in the toolbar, or right-click the chart and choose Add Indicator. Indicators on the chart covers settings, hiding and removing them.

Indicators also feed the rest of Chartnaut. A definition can read VWAP to know whether a break happened above it, and a study can measure how far price travelled in ATRs. When the agent needs an indicator inside a definition, it asks you with a card such as Add VWAP? before it uses it. Indicators inside definitions explains how that works.

Your own indicators can read other indicators too. A band indicator can build on a VWAP you already have, and the preview tells you when the indicator it depends on has no values yet.

Indicator memory is how many bars of history an indicator can warm up on. A 200-bar average needs 200 bars behind it before its first value is settled, and your plan sets the most any one indicator can ask for. The per-chart count includes the indicators each one reads, so a band indicator built on VWAP counts as two. Library limits, Chart limits and Indicator memory cover each one.

The community library

Indicators other traders have shared are in the community library. Add one to your library and use it on a chart or inside a definition like one of your own. You can share your own there too.
